The demand for pool of pools’ chassis at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach is often greater than supply and port appointments missed due to chassis shortages can wreak havoc with warehouse productivity and increase your product’s time to market. Any number of factors can create congestion at the Ports:  labor and equipment shortages, increased volume prior to holiday shutdowns, stop work meetings and more. When congestion becomes too great terminals will block or place onerous conditions on the return of empty containers (often with little or no warning). When motor carriers are blocked from returning empty containers, they are forced to drop the empty containers in their yards and are prevented from reusing the chassis to pick up the next loaded container. This, coupled with gray pool chassis shortages and long lines to enter the port, create challenges in hitting loaded container appointment windows. In times of sever congestion or gray pool chassis shortages (that sometimes last for weeks) motor carrier productivity is cut in half. This decrease in productivity results in delayed pickups and higher costs (such as per diem charges on empty containers that can’t be returned and demurrage charges on loaded containers that can’t be picked up).
